Avocado Society Backs KNCCI Dubai Office to Curb Export Losses

By Janet Mutio

The Avocado Society of Kenya has endorsed the establishment of a Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry mission office in Dubai, saying the move will help shield Kenyan avocado exporters from financial losses and enhance the country’s market presence in the Middle East.

Avocado Society Chief Executive Officer Muthomi Ernest said exporters have long suffered losses due to delayed or failed payments, particularly in international markets. He described the Dubai liaison office as a timely intervention that will restore confidence within the sector.

“For a long time, our people have been losing money through non payment claims,” Muthomi said. “This office, which we are partnering on with KNCCI, is a game changer for avocado exporters.”

He noted that the office will support faster payments, reduce commercial disputes, and offer a dependable contact point whenever challenges arise between Kenyan exporters and buyers in Dubai.

In addition to addressing payment concerns, Muthomi said the office will be used to actively promote and brand Kenyan avocados, helping the country compete more effectively with other producing nations in the region.

“We must tell Kenya’s story and create visibility for our avocados so that we can secure better prices and increased volumes,” he said.

Muthomi explained that the idea was driven by members of the avocado sector and welcomed KNCCI’s leadership in implementing it. He confirmed that the Avocado Society has formally expressed interest in partnering with the chamber to safeguard exports.

He also encouraged non member organizations to join KNCCI and benefit from the initiative, stressing that cooperation is essential for protecting exporters and expanding markets.

The Avocado Society will provide technical support, including guidance on quality standards, inspections, and export requirements. Muthomi said clear export protocols will also be put in place through the Dubai office.

With more than 160 registered avocado exporters shipping to Dubai, Muthomi said the sector is now better prepared and more secure as the export season begins next month, adding that due diligence has been carried out to protect farmers and traders alike.
