Empovia47 Foundation has renewed its call for nationwide mental health awareness as the country enters a tense electioneering period, highlighting the mounting emotional and psychological pressures facing young people.
Speaking during a meeting in Nairobi, Chief Executive Officer Maximilla Wafula underscored that Health and Well Being, with a strong emphasis on mental health, remains one of the organisation’s most important pillars. She noted that the youth, who form the foundation’s primary target group, are increasingly vulnerable to stress, anxiety, trauma, and emotional instability.
Ms Wafula warned that the heightened political activities, uncertainty, and societal expectations often associated with elections can significantly affect mental stability for leaders, candidates, youths, and the public at large.
She reflected on the recent wave of demonstrations where many young people lost their lives while others were left deeply traumatised. She said these events have created emotional wounds, fear, and long lasting mental health scars that must be acknowledged and addressed.
According to her, mental health challenges have become a silent killer in Kenya, with rising cases of suicide, stress related breakdowns, and increasing feminised struggles within schools. She added that many young people continue to suffer quietly due to limited safe spaces, inadequate mentorship, and the absence of proper support systems.
Ms Wafula urged young people across all forty seven counties to take an active role in promoting mental health awareness both in their communities and in schools. She emphasised that strengthening this pillar is central to Empovia47 Foundation’s mission to empower, uplift, and protect the youth.
Empovia47 Foundation will host a webinar next week focusing on health and well being, with mental health as the central theme. The webinar aims to equip young people across the forty seven counties with knowledge, tools, and support to help them build resilience and make sound decisions during this critical period.
Ms Wafula called for collective responsibility, noting that empowering mentally strong youth is key to building a stable and productive society.
