Businessman and Retired KDF Officer Challenge Development Halt at Uhuru Park
By Elijah Odanga
A businessman and retired Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer, Issa Kuno, has strongly opposed efforts by Nairobi City County officials to halt the development of a section of Green Park within Uhuru Park.
Kuno, who claims to have legally acquired the land, presented proof of bank payments and leasing documents that were processed during the tenure of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), the body responsible for city administration at the time.
During a heated exchange, Kuno argued that he had followed all legal procedures and that his dealings were transparent and legitimate. “This is the legal way of life. I have paid for the land, and I have court rulings to back up my claims. I have done nothing wrong,” he said.
Kuno further provided receipts for payments, which he insisted were processed under the previous government, as well as a court ruling that affirmed his right to develop the area. Despite these legal documents, city officials remained skeptical, demanding further clarification from Kuno regarding the project’s approval.
The dispute hinges on whether the proper procedures were followed by the previous administration, and whether the current City County government has the authority to revoke the development plans. Kuno remains adamant, stating, “If you refuse to answer, this is the law. This is a court ruling. I have followed the process.”
While the officials acknowledged the receipt of his documentation, they emphasized the need for clarity regarding approvals from the relevant sectors and questioned whether proper consent was granted by the county government.
At the center of the controversy is the development of Green Park, an area of significant public interest, which has sparked a wider debate about urban planning and land use within Nairobi. Kuno’s case now rests with the judiciary, with both parties waiting for the courts to clarify the legality of the ongoing development.
