Muslim leaders urge Kenyans to support the people in Gaza
Reporting by James Mutua
A coalition of organizations under the banner of the Voice of Palestine launched the Gaza Medical Campaign on Thursday, aiming to deliver urgent medical assistance to the beleaguered population of Gaza. The consortium includes the Jamia Mosque Committee, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), the National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF), the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), the Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Practitioners (KAMMP), and numerous mosques throughout Nairobi. The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels, with more than 42,000 lives lost due to relentless bombing campaigns. The situation has led to widespread destruction, displacing over 2 million people and leaving many vulnerable to starvation and severe injuries. Hospitals, already stretched to their limits, are struggling to cope with the influx of casualties, forcing many to seek treatment in neighboring countries.
In response to this dire situation, the Voice of Palestine aims to raise at least $500,000 to support medical initiatives both within Gaza and beyond. Kenyans and global citizens have already contributed over Ksh 50 million to assist humanitarian efforts in the region, demonstrating a strong commitment to solidarity with the people of Gaza.
Additionally, the conflict has expanded to Lebanon, resulting in significant casualties and displacement, with over 1,000 deaths reported. As tensions rise and the prospect of broader conflict looms, we urge the Kenyan government to advocate for peace and stability in the region. Kenya's historical role in promoting peace, notably in South Sudan, exemplifies its capacity to effect positive change.
The consortium called upon the Kenyan government to uphold its commitment to the African Union charter by supporting the rights and freedoms of the Palestinian people. They also invited all Kenyans, regardless of background, to contribute to the medical needs of the people of Palestine.
